Jon--Yes, I heard about Ken's recent passing. What a sweet man he was. I last saw him at our WWII monument ceremony in 6/14. I am especially honored that you, a son of one of these incredible men, liked my story. What a pleasure it was to research and write about them. They leave a great legacy.

Stacia, I am sorry I didn't see your question in time. Did you end up going to Laval on your September trip? For a Duvall descendant, Laval would be a great stop. We loved visiting the castle where they offer delightful English tours. One of our Duvall descendants was a knight there, supposedly.

To Dick, Stacia and Jon, I apologize for not responding to your kind comments before now. Only last night did I discover that I no longer automatically got notice of new comments.

Dick-- I think the Willamette story would, indeed, make a great addition to your next book.

Had read your article last year and enjoyed it. Saw in the obits today that Ken had passed, he was the last one left from that team (my dad Marv Goodman died in 2004). That closes the door on a bit of history. Feeling sad today.

Bonjour!
I too am a Maureen Duvall descendent and found your blog when I googled Laval. I am heading to France in September---this time a week in Paris and a week in Loire. Would you recommend using one of our Loire days to make the trip to Laval? Enjoyed your writing and your blog---thanks!

Great article. Very interesting. Is Ken Jacobson still alive? My Idaho Vandals defeated Willamette in 1941, and I saw Willamette play us again in Moscow, Idaho in the late 1940's. I am putting the 1941 Pearl Harbor team in my next book. Thanks and best wishes. Dick Riggs, 701 9th Ave, Lewiston

Stumbled on your PH story (and well-written blog site) after first connecting to an article RE Willamette team's experience, in Hawaii. Well done! I'm collaborating on a biographical novel and screenplay about a PH survivor whose good friend was a USS Arizona burn victim aboard SS Coolidge. Regards.

Are you any relation to Lieutenant Jean Southworth, who was my company commander nurse in Medical Corps School, Great Lakes, Illinois in 1966?
